International Day for Tolerance
16th of November 2020
Considering that social and economic relations are
organized on a regional and global basis, human activity
has expanded across continents. Globalization has led to
the interconnection of national economies and hence the
global community has fostered a multi-cultural, multi-religious
and ethnically diverse environment.
However, globalization could be a breeding ground for violence
and conflict without integrating the values of tolerance and
coexistence. Tolerance ensures the sustainability of peace and
development through the respect and appreciation of the
diversity.
Hence, acknowledging that tolerance is a prerequisite
for peaceful coexistence, the UN General Assembly invited
UN Member States to observe International Day for
Tolerance (Resolution 51/95), committing to the Declaration
of Principles of Tolerance adopted by the UNESCO in 1995
that qualifies tolerance as a moral duty, legal and political requirement for individuals as well as States.
The Declaration stressed the importance of ensuring equal treatment and opportunity for all. Thus, the UN encourages the organization of events and activities that promote the principles of tolerance and coexistence. By focusing on the education sector, a culture of tolerance can be developed, in addition to developing the capacities of the youth for critical thinking and individual awareness.
International Day for Tolerance is a reminder that acceptance and appreciation of the great diversity in the global community is vital with the rapid acceleration of globalization and constant conflict.
The Geneva Institute for Human Rights aspires to contribute to ensuring an ideal society founded on peace and social harmony. The Institute appeals to all States to actively reject racism and discrimination through the encouragement of peace and non-violence. The Institute calls on countries in the Middle East, North and East Africa to ensure good governance practices and recognize universal protected fundamental freedoms and human rights.
Moreover, the Geneva Institute for Human Rights appeals to states to uphold the values of tolerance through governance interventions by ratifying existing international human rights conventions and/or drafting national legislation that ensures equality of treatment and opportunity for all groups in society.
Furthermore, emphasizing the dangerous consequences of intolerance, encouraging global dialogue and promoting educating the youth on tolerance in practice are key factors in building a sustainable and peaceful future.
