International Day of Sport for Development and Peace - 2020

The 6th of April commemorates International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, as sport is considered to be a basic pillar of love and harmony among all. Sport is a fundamental right and is a means of establishing peace and sustainable development, thus prompting the UN General Assembly, in view of the values of tolerance and harmony, to allocate a special day in Resolution 67/296 on the 23 of August 2013.

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, specifically this year, is a formidable opportunity to promote global solidarity through sport. With the rapid spreading of the COVID-19 pandemic in different parts of the world, social isolation measures and physical distancing have been highly suggested practices, which poses a challenge in staying active.

In light of the present crisis, GIHR urges all to follow the instructions given out by the World Health Organisation, so that we can overcome this trying period. In addition, the Institute calls upon all countries to continue raising awareness through various forms of communication on the dire consequences of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Furthermore, taking the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into account, it is even more necessary to reinforce the importance of Sport during this time, as sport remains to be an important tool in ensuring societal progress. In recognition of the growing contribution that sport plays in promoting tolerance and respect, as well as the fact that physical activity improves mental health and lowers stress, GIHR urges all to stay healthy, active and demonstrate solidarity during this difficult period of social distancing.

Global unity and solidarity shall help us get through this time of uncertainty.
