"Promoting the Active Participation of Women"

The 8th of June 2020 marks the launching of GIHR’s first online training session and project on “Promoting Active Participation of Women”, in collaboration with AMAN (Protection and Social Rehabilitation Centre - Qatar).
Women issues, the respect of their rights and fundamental freedoms remains to be one of the core issues at the heart of human rights. These rights include but are not limited to; the right to education, the right to vote, the right to live a life free from violence and discrimination. The role of affirmative action for women's empowerment, through acknowledging and addressing women’s issues, leads to the enhancement of their involvement in decision making spaces and allows the integration of women’s issues in all public development policies.
The respect of women’s rights is a global issue, an integral element of human rights and essentiel to global development. This project's objective is to encourage a thriving culture of women’s human rights, to promote and enable the effective participation of women and strengthen their presence in discussions, with a special focus on cases of gender based violence.
Hence, this project focuses on enhancing knowledge on the empowerment of women's rights and interacts with international, regional and national protection mechanisms, providing a practical framework aimed at enhancing the capacity of the the participants from the Center for Protection and Social Rehabilitation (AMAN) and developing their capabilities in order to consolidate a comprehensive approach to human rights.

Optional Protocols).
- Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination
Against Women (CEDAW)
- Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women
(DEVAW)
Qatar Overview: Actions taken to achieve the Sustainable
Development Goals (2030)
The empowerment and autonomy of women, reflected through
the improvement of their political, social and economic
participation, is necessary in order to achieve the Sustainable
Development Goals (2030) and successfully integrate and align
said goals with the Second National Development Strategy of Qatar.
Structure of the program:
This training course is the first of its kind in 2020, targeting both
male and female employees of AMAN, who were divided into
two groups. The project consists of three training courses,
targeting the participants of both groups, over the course of
six weeks. (3 weeks for Group A & 3 weeks for Group B).
Training course I: General concepts and obligations of Qatar
at an International Level
Training course II: Women's Rights and the Protection Mechanisms
Training course III: The Art of report writing
Insight into the training sessions (Day 1):
The training session that took place today was an introductory session that focused on various aspects of human rights in Qatar. Topics such as the fundamental human rights, the question of restricting human rights and the position of Qatar on these aspects were invoked. In addition, the main organs of the United Nations, primarily the International Court of Justice (ICJ), was a focal point of discussion.
The methodology of the training allows the participants to bring their own professional expertise and experience to the training session due to the collegial atmosphere created. Similarly, the methodology is participatory thus in turn facilitating critical reflection and analysis.
The role of GIHR in Qatar
Since its establishment in 2004, GIHR has been very active in the state of Qatar. GIHR has organized several training courses in Qatar with the Government, National Human Rights Institutions and with different human rights centres, such as :

2004 : Training Course on the International Human Rights Law, for Human Rights Activist from Qatar, co-organized with the Arab Organization for Human Rights (AOHR) and the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC)

2017: The Ambassadors of Humanitarian Action, co organized with the foundation Sheikh Thani Ibn Abdullah for Humanitarian Services (Raf). A programme with the aim of supporting efforts to build and improve the capacity of the human rights and humanitarian movement in Qatar by empowering Qatari activists with the skills and knowledge of the UN agencies and international organizations.
