Reliance on fossil fuels has become unsustainable and harmful to the planet, which is precisely the reason as to why it is necessary to change the way we produce and consume energy. It is important to note that notable efforts have been made in transition to an affordable, reliable and sustainable energy system, by prioritizing energy efficient practices.
However, according to the UN, 13% of the global population still lacks access to modern electricity and 3 billion people rely on wood, coal, charcoal or animal waste for cooking and heating.
Moreover, due to a lack of access to electricity, as well as clean and safe cooking fuels and technologies, a third of the world’s population continue to be exposed to harmful household air pollution.
The five targets to create action to ensure universal access to sustainable energy by 2030, are as follows:
Ensure universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services.
Increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.
Double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.
Enhance international cooperation to facilitate access to clean energy research and technology, including renewable energy, energy efficiency and advanced and cleaner fossil-fuel technology, and promote investment in energy infrastructure and clean energy technology.
Expand infrastructure and upgrade technology for supplying modern and sustainable energy services for all in developing countries
