SDG 13 : CLIMATE ACTION

Goal : Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Climate change is no longer a debated possibility, rather a painful reality and threat to our entire civilization, carrying catastrophic implications that are undeniably visible.

Unfortunately, the global community continues to move farther away from commitments necessary to reverse climate change, which in turn hinders the achievement of many SDGs.

Why is climate action necessary?

Climate change threatens the quality of life and the future of our planet, with implications such as sea-level rise, shifts in growing seasons, and an increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as storms, floods and droughts.

Moreover, climate change threatens to reverse years of progress in development, as well as exacerbate existing threats such as food and water scarcity.

Therefore, tackling the issue of climate change ensures sustainable development, poverty reduction and fosters economic growth, while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building climate resilience

The five targets to create action to combat climate change, are as follows:

  1. Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate related disasters

  2. Integrate climate change measures into policies and planning

  3. Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning

  4. Implement the un framework convention on climate change

  5. Promote mechanisms to raise capacity for planning and management
